It has come to my attention that some Scout Troops
still permit the hazing of new Scouts.
Older Scouts sometimes feel that new Scouts should be
“initiated” into the troop with a hazing activity. Sometimes this takes the form of trying to
scare Cub Scouts and other potential recruits.
The overall effect of these activities is that you lose
boys from your program and you don’t get boys into your Unit that would
otherwise have an opportunity to benefit from the Scouting program. In addition young boys that we are trying to
help to manhood get mistreated.
I hope that you will agree with me
that hazing has no place in Scouting.
Please be alert to this desire of older boys to haze the new Scouts and
direct their efforts into meaningful ceremonies and efforts to train new Scouts.
